Day 18: Do you worry what people think of you?

31 Days of BPD

I worry how I appear to others and how they perceive me, yes.

But do I worry more than the next person? I don’t know.

Doesn’t everyone care what other’s think of them?

Doesn’t everyone present their life with an Instagram filter on top of it to make it appear better than it actually is?

    Hey there kid.
I find myself somewhat needlessly concerned – at times – regarding what people think of what I do while I generally couldn’t give a lactose-intolerant sewer rat’s impacted bowel what they think of who I am.
I believe that who someone is carries more import than what they do, so it’s somewhat contradictory for me to be more concerned about what people think about what I do than who I am.
But there’s any number of ways to consider things I’ve done, and any number of people out there who will discover an entirely new and different way of looking at those things and reach previously undiscovered conclusions about them.
    Who I am?
Hey… either they’re gonna get me or they’re not, so…
    whatever.

And it just depends upon who they are.
At our work for quite a while people were getting into an uproar over the “lack of respect” shown to the worker bees by those in the upper echelon. Some of them were seething over it all, and I really couldn’t get worked up over it. A Union rep called me on it, big time, as a matter of my “not caring”.

“Well, why would I give a shit if someone who I have no respect for doesn’t respect me?”

    And labels / filters?
To be able to say “married almost forty years, helped raise two incredible children, highly regarded by my work peers …” and so on sounds a whole lot more impressive when accompanied by the well-worn phrase “batshit crazy”.
But if you’re like my BPD wife, you fully understand that what you usually are working with is your perception of how other people perceive you …
… which can be pretty sketchy at times.

For what it’s worth, you seem to have things together and I think you’re pretty cool.
Of course, I am indeed batshit crazy.
